ANTIGONE IN MOLENBEEK

| Mała scena

Sophocles’ tragedy adapted to the reality of our contemporary, multicultural societies. Set in Molenbeek - impoverished, overcrowded Brussels district, often labeled by the media as „little Morocco” or even as „jihad base” - it tells a story of a young woman who is not allowed to bury her brother, as he has been accused of extremist terrorism. Antigone is now known as Nouria, a talented law student, and just as in the classic, she wants to bury the remains of her deceased brother, a suicide bomber. But the authorities decide otherwise. In a poetic monologue we see Nouria go to extremes to give her brother’s body a final resting place - and we see it end badly. An up-do-date version of an age-old issue: how fear can get in the way of empathy and how a lack of understanding can lead to self-destruction.
